Custom pottery set cost calculator (mugs and dinnerware)
Handmade pottery is usually priced per piece, so a set is the number of pieces times the potter's price, plus anything made only for your order. Enter your own numbers, or start from the published example built in, then post your brief to get real prices from potters.
How to use this calculator
Potters usually price handmade work per piece, so the calculator multiplies the number of place settings by the pieces in each setting and by a price per piece. A typical place setting is a dinner plate, a side or salad plate, a bowl and a mug, so four settings of four pieces is 16 pieces. For a mug set, enter the number of mugs and 1 piece per setting.
The default price comes from one published example: a handmade four-piece place setting listed at $195 by Design Within Reach in October 2026, which works out at about $49 a piece. Prices vary a lot. A potter writing in Ceramic Arts Network gave $25 to $120 as the retail range for everyday functional pieces such as mugs and bowls, and $180 to $350 for hand-carved serving pieces. Put in the potter's own price as soon as you have it.
Two lines are there for custom work. Pieces can crack or warp in the kiln and glazes vary from firing to firing, so for a matched set some potters make a few extra pieces and may charge for them; enter them under extra pieces if your potter does. Anything done once for your order, such as a new glaze test, a logo, names or a custom shape, goes in the one-off fee. Shipping is not included: plates and bowls are heavy and need careful packing.

Questions about this calculator
How much does a custom handmade dinnerware set cost?
It depends on the potter, the number of pieces and the glaze. As one published example, a handmade four-piece place setting was listed at $195 in October 2026, so a set for four would be about $780 before custom work and shipping. Post your brief to get bids from potters.
How much do custom handmade mugs cost?
Everyday handmade mugs and bowls retail at about $25 to $120 each according to Ceramic Arts Network. Logos, names, matching colours and small runs can add a one-off design or setup cost. Ask what is included.
How long does a custom pottery set take?
Usually weeks, not days: pieces are thrown or built, dried slowly, bisque-fired, glazed and fired again. One potter listing handmade place settings on CustomMade quoted 8 to 12 weeks. Ask for the timeline in the bid.
